12 Weird Things

I was going back through some old posts, looking for something in particular. I had forgotten about this post:

“You’ve probably all seen names you thought were kind of strange, and wondered what the parents were thinking when they named their kids. At HL&P, we had men named Jack Frost and French Gurley.

In today’s obits in the paper, there is a man named Browne Rice.”

I love strange names.

Ashley (pinkbarbie21posted the “Eight weird things about me” tag that so many of us have done in the past. I did it a couple of years ago, but decided to do it slightly differently this time. And I did 12 weird things instead of 8.

Here’s 12 weird things about me….weird as compared to the world’s standards:

1. I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, and He died on the cross to pay the price we should have been required to pay for the sins we commit in our lives.

John 3:16-21…..16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.   19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”   NIV

Rom 3:23-26…..23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished- 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. NIV

2. I believe in marriage for a lifetime…not till something better comes along. I believe in sticking together for better or worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health.

Gen 2:24…..24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.  NIV

3. I believe love is a choice; not a warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you look at or are near your object of affection. Sure…those things happen, but that is not the basis of love.

Ps 136:26…..26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.  His love endures forever. NIV

Gen 29:20…..20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.  NIV

1 Cor 13:4-8…..4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. NIV

4. I believe sex should wait for marriage.

Gen 2:24…..24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. NIV

5. I believe getting drunk is wrong. I didn’t say it would send a Christian to Hell, but I do believe it goes against God’s word.

Prov 20:1…..Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. NIV

Eph 5:17-19….. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. NIV

1 Cor 6:9-11…..9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. NIV

6. I believe we should go to church regularly.

Heb 10:25…..25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching. NIV

7. I believe marriage is between one man and one woman! No same sex marriages!

Gen 2:20-24…..20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field.

But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.  NIV

8. I believe using foul language is wrong.

Col 3:7-8….. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. NIV

9. I believe the man is the head of the house. That doesn’t mean the wife is to be walked on or given orders. It doesn’t mean she is a slave or a door mat….just that the man was placed at the head of the family to guide and protect it. He is responsible to God for the outcome of his family.

Eph 5:22-23….. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. NIV

10. This one will be controversial to some of you. So be it. I believe the pastor of a church should be a man, and never a woman. Since the husband – a man – is the head of a home, I cannot believe God would change from that arrangement and put a woman at the head of the church home. It is argued by some that a husband and wife team pastoring a church is alright because the husband is over the wife in that arrangement. I disagree. The wife would be a co-pastor, in the position of being THE pastor if the husband were to die. I’ll say it very strongly….I believe a church that puts a woman in the position of pastor over a church is not following the word of God.

1 Tim 3:1-7
3:1 It is a true saying that if a man wants to be a pastor  he has a good ambition. 2 For a pastor must be a good man whose life cannot be spoken against. He must have only one wife, and he must be hard working and thoughtful, orderly, and full of good deeds. He must enjoy having guests in his home and must be a good Bible teacher. 3 He must not be a drinker or quarrelsome, but he must be gentle and kind and not be one who loves money. 4 He must have a well-behaved family, with children who obey quickly and quietly. 5 For if a man can’t make his own little family behave, how can he help the whole church?

6 The pastor must not be a new Christian because he might be proud of being chosen so soon, and pride comes before a fall. (Satan’s downfall is an example.) 7 Also, he must be well spoken of by people outside the church-those who aren’t Christians-so that Satan can’t trap him with many accusations and leave him without freedom to lead his flock.
TLB

11. I believe not only that Jesus Christ died for us, but He is coming back to take those who believe in Him, to Heaven to live with Him forever. And I believe it’s going to be soon. I believe it will be in my lifetime.

John 14:2-4…..2 In My Father’s house are many mansions ; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.  NKJV

12. I believe that if the Christians in America would wake up, and turn toward God, He would heal the problems in our land.

2 Chron 7:13-16…..13 “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land . 15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. 16 I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. NIV

See….that passage is not written to those who do not belong to God. It isn’t written to the non-believers. It is written to people “who are called by my name!” In Old Testament times, that was the Jews. Today, it is the Christians.

He was telling His own children to turn from their wicked ways! Today, Christians are turning more toward wicked ways. They do the things the world does. They sleep around just like non-Christians. They drink to the point of drunkenness, just like non-Christians. They abort babies, just like non-Christians. They divorce, just like non-Christians. They take a “live and let live” attitude toward homosexual practices, just like non-Christians.

As the world – the non-Christians – do more and more evil things, the church is right behind them. They are several steps behind, but they move more towards evil just like the world. And they say, “See, we’re not that bad. We aren’t like those heathens!”

And God says stop! He says humble ourselves to Him, and seek Him…and pray. Move toward Him instead of toward Satan.

John 14:15…..15 “If you love me, obey my commandments.  NLT

Matt 7:21-23…..21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
NIV

How weird are you? Do you love Him? Obey Him.

  1. @DKT1978 – Thanks, Debbie. :heartbeat:
I sent you an email, because we are postponing the Bible Study tonight. Kathryn and Mark can’t be there, or Glenn and Linda. So since too many would miss it tonight, we’ll just skip it tonight.

  2. That is really good. I knew you couldn’t be the kind of person that had traits about you. You have great morals and I can’t imagine what a nice world it would be if everyone had your mind set…good job!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. @pinkbarbie21 – Thank you, Ashley. I hope you don’t think I’ve never done anything wrong, because I have. Everybody has because we are human.
I did a few weird traits in a post before…everybody has some things that others would consider weird. I’ll have to see if I can find it and show it to you.

  4. Well of course you have made mistakes….we are inperfect. But compared to some you seem to really have your head on straight and have your morals in lines that’s all I meant. I am just thinking of the mistakes I have made in my life and I wish I had my head on as straight and morals as in line as you seem to.
And of course we all have those traits that others find weird, but that’s what makes the world such a colorful fun place to live in. Think how boring the world would be if we all did and liked the same things = ) Don’t get me wrong I am not one of those that sees the world through rosey glasses, I just love how we all have our own little traits that make us unque.

  5. Amazing how we can agree on one dozen things and still manage to debate so much. :ROTFL:What’s funny is that growing up in North Georgia, I never had the impression any of those things might be weird until I moved to Florida. Maybe I just didn’t get out as much. ๐Ÿ˜†

  6. @MrParadox – When I was your age, most of those things still weren’t that weird. But over the last 30 years or so, things have really gone downhill. It started, of course, long before that. But I can still remember when people gasped and stared if they saw 2 gay men holding hands. Now, not that many people do. And I’ve seen gay men actually kissing and fondling each other, in a Baptist Church. I’m telling you….I felt like I was truly in the presence of evil in that church that day. It was at my cousin’s funeral, and he died of AIDS. It was an “inclusive” church here in the Houston area. My cousin was the choir director there, and he always said that “Pastor Bob” did not seem like any other Baptist preacher he ever knew. What he meant by that was Bob didn’t tell him what he was doing was wrong. :hammer:

  7. @SingingMom – Wow…I still haven’t seen that in the North Georgia area. Things may be different in some parts of Atlanta these days. But Texas…well, you know what Sergeant Hartman said about Texas (warning: #8 violation)…(hope there’s no relation!) :lol:I know we may disagree on what we think is God’s opinion of the CA Supreme Court saying gays can get married, but I think we can agree that He takes a pretty dim view of churches that actually perform the ceremony.

  8. @MrParadox – The first time I ever saw them holding hands was when I was a senior in high school, at the Galleria Shopping Mall in Houston. That was 1975. But it was still a rare sighting then. Yes…I take a very dim view of churches that perform the ceremonies, but I also take a very dim view of governments who condone it.
